Settings for Your WordPress Blog

Important: All instructions below are geared for theme Twenty Ten.  If you’re set up with a different theme, these instructions may not work exactly as stated. However, all WordPress themes are similar, so adjust the instructions to fit yours. Also, if any part of the instructions below is outdated or confusing, email me at jamess@hawaii.edu

oneTo get to the SETTINGS:

  1. In your “Twenty-Ten” WordPress blog, click MY SITES at left top of menubar.
  2. Click SETTINGS in the sidebar menu that appears.

two To select a THEME:

  1. On the SETTINGS page, scroll down the menu and click THEMES.
  2. If TWENTY TEN isn’t listed, type “twenty ten” without the quotes in the search box.
  3. Follow the directions provided in the theme.

three To allow classmates to post COMMENTS easily:

  1. On the SETTINGS page, click DISCUSSION (listed across the top of the page).
  2. Under “Comment,” SWITCH OFF “Comment author must fill out name and email.”
  3. SWITCH OFF “Users must be registered and logged in to comment.”
  4. SWITCH OFF “Automatically close comments on articles older than XX days.”
  5. SWITCH OFF “Comment must be manually approved.”
  6. SWITCH OFF “Comment author must have a previously approved comment.”
  7. Click SAVE SETTINGS.

four To discourage SEARCH ENGINES:

  1. On the SETTINGS page, if you’re not already on the GENERAL page (listed across the top of the page), click on it.
  2. Scroll down to PRIVACY.
  3. Select HIDDEN.
  4. click SAVE SETTINGS.
  5. If you don’t see “hidden” option, make sure you’ve launched your site. These options will appear once your blog is launched.

five To set TIMEZONE for Hawaii:

  1. On the SETTINGS page, if you’re not already on the GENERAL page (listed across the top of the page), click on it.
  2. Scroll down to SITE TIMEZONE.
  3. For TIMEZONE select UTC-10.
  4. Click SAVE SETTINGS.
